What Is a Semester Grade?

A semester grade is the overall grade that represents your performance during a semester. Depending on your school or course, it may combine quarter grades, midterms, projects, tests, and a final exam.

When these components have different weights, you should not simply average the percentages. Instead, each grade is multiplied by its assigned weight and the resulting contributions are added together.

For example, a final exam worth 30% has a larger effect on the semester grade than an assessment worth 10%. This is why knowing the actual grading weights is important before calculating your semester average.

The Semester Grade Formula

For a course with two grading periods and a final exam, the weighted semester grade can be calculated as:

Semester Grade = (Q1 × Q1 Weight) + (Q2 × Q2 Weight) + (Final × Final Weight)

When percentages are used as weights, convert them to decimal values before multiplying.

Example: 40-40-20

Quarter 1: 85% × 0.40 = 34

Quarter 2: 78% × 0.40 = 31.2

Final Exam: 90% × 0.20 = 18

34 + 31.2 + 18 = 83.2%

The calculated semester grade is 83.2% .

Understanding a 40-40-20 Grading System

A 40-40-20 structure is one example of a semester grading setup. In this structure, the first two grading periods each contribute 40%, while the final exam contributes 20%.

Component Weight
Quarter 1 40%
Quarter 2 40%
Final Exam 20%
Total 100%

Your school may use a different distribution, such as 45-45-10, 50-50, or another custom structure. Always use the actual weights listed in your syllabus or grading policy.

How to Calculate Your Semester Grade

1

Find Your Grades and Weights

Check your syllabus or gradebook for each grading component and its percentage weight.

2

Convert Weights to Decimals

For example, 40% becomes 0.40 and 20% becomes 0.20.

3

Multiply Each Grade by Its Weight

This gives you the number of percentage points each component contributes to the semester grade.

4

Add the Weighted Contributions

Add the products from every component to get your overall semester grade.

How to Calculate Your Semester Grade Without a Final

If the final exam has not happened yet, you can calculate an estimated current standing from the completed grading periods. However, because the final's weight has not yet been earned, the completed components may not represent 100% of the course.

For example, suppose Quarter 1 is worth 40% and Quarter 2 is worth 40%, while the final is worth 20%. If your grades are 82% and 88%, the earned weighted points are:

(82 × 0.40) + (88 × 0.40) = 32.8 + 35.2 = 68

If you want the average across only those completed components, normalize the completed weights:

68 ÷ 0.80 = 85%

That 85% represents the student's average across the completed 80% of the grading structure. It is not the final semester grade because the remaining 20% has not yet been earned.

What Score Do I Need on My Final to Reach My Target?

The reverse calculation works by first calculating the weighted points you have already earned. Those points are subtracted from your target semester grade, and the remaining amount is divided by the final exam weight.

Required Final = (Target Grade − Weighted Points So Far) ÷ Final Weight

Example: Targeting 70%

Quarter 1: 65% × 40% = 26

Quarter 2: 72% × 40% = 28.8

Weighted points earned: 54.8

Target: 70%

Final weight: 20%

(70 − 54.8) ÷ 0.20 = 76%

The student needs 76% on the final exam to finish with a 70% semester grade.

High School vs. College Semester Grade Calculation

The calculation method is the same whenever a course uses weighted percentages, but the grading structure can differ between schools and courses.

Factor High School College / University
Structure Quarters, tests, projects, final Midterms, finals, assignments, projects
Weighting Varies by school Varies by course
Grade Scale Percentage and/or letter Percentage, letter, or GPA
Passing Requirement School dependent Course and institution dependent

Letter Grade and GPA Conversion Chart

The following is a commonly used reference scale. Your school may use different percentage boundaries or GPA values.

Percentage Letter GPA Reference
97–100% A+ 4.0
93–96% A 4.0
90–92% A- 3.7
87–89% B+ 3.3
83–86% B 3.0
80–82% B- 2.7
77–79% C+ 2.3
73–76% C 2.0
70–72% C- 1.7
67–69% D+ 1.3
63–66% D 1.0
60–62% D- 0.7
Below 60% F 0.0

Important: GPA conversion is not universal. Some institutions use different letter-grade boundaries, plus/minus systems, weighted GPAs, or institutional conversion formulas.

Prelim, Midterm, and Final Grade Calculation

Some courses use three major grading periods such as prelim, midterm, and final. The same weighted-average principle applies: multiply each period by its assigned weight and add the contributions.

Example: 30-30-40

Prelim: 82% × 0.30 = 24.6

Midterm: 88% × 0.30 = 26.4

Final: 91% × 0.40 = 36.4

24.6 + 26.4 + 36.4 = 87.4%

This is an example calculation only. Schools and universities can use different grading structures, equivalent grades, and passing requirements, so students should verify the actual policy used by their institution.

Semester Grade Calculator Worked Examples

Example 1

High School 40-40-20

Q1 = 88%, Q2 = 76%, Final = 84%.

(88 × .40) + (76 × .40) + (84 × .20) = 82.4%
Example 2

Three Equal Terms

Three grading periods are 91%, 85%, and 79%, with equal weights.

(91 + 85 + 79) ÷ 3 = 85%
Example 3

Midterm and Final

Midterm = 72%, Final = 88%, with both worth 50%.

(72 × .50) + (88 × .50) = 80%
Example 4

Reverse Calculation

Q1 = 70%, Q2 = 68%, each worth 40%. Target = 65%. Final = 20%.

[(70 × .40) + (68 × .40)] = 55.2
(65 − 55.2) ÷ .20 = 49%

Common Semester Grade Calculation Mistakes

Averaging grades without considering weights

If one assessment is worth 40% and another is worth 10%, treating them as equal will produce the wrong result.

Entering the wrong weight

Always check your syllabus or gradebook before entering the percentages.

Confusing current average with final grade

Your current average may represent only the completed portion of a course and may not include the final exam.

Assuming every school uses the same grade scale

Letter-grade cutoffs, GPA conversions, rounding rules, and passing thresholds vary between institutions.
