Position Overview

The Tuba City Boarding School, part of the Bureau of Indian Education, is hiring a School Counselor to provide professional counseling services within the Special Education Department. The counselor will support students in personal, academic, and vocational development, helping them build skills to navigate both their education and life challenges effectively.

Key Responsibilities

As a School Counselor, your duties may include:

  • Serving as a Guidance Counselor, complementing the work of administration and academic/vocational staff.
  • Providing individual and group counseling in personal, academic, and vocational areas to build self-concept, self-discipline, and life coping skills.
  • Conducting orientation and guidance services for new and returning students.
  • Counseling students on career planning, education options, and social development.
  • Overseeing and implementing school testing services to meet student needs.
  • Collecting and analyzing student data, preparing case histories and summaries, and safeguarding confidential records.
  • Maintaining detailed counseling records and documentation.
  • Collaborating with academic staff, dormitory staff, community resources, and interdisciplinary teams to address student needs.
  • Assisting with Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Individual Review Group (IRG) committees.
  • Helping students select career pathways and prepare academic schedules aligned with their goals.
  • Supporting training for school staff and serving as a liaison to referral agencies.

Conditions of Employment

  • Subject to a Public Trust background investigation.
  • Must maintain state School Counselor Certification.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Must be certified by a state Department of Education.
  • One-year probationary period (two academic semesters) may apply.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Direct Deposit required.
  • May require overtime work.
  • FLSA Status: Exempt.

Education Requirements (Pay Levels 21–24)

  • Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field (with at least 24 credit hours in counseling).
  • State Certification as a School Counselor is required.
    • Provisional or emergency certifications may be accepted under state authority.
    • If certified in a different state, candidates will have two contract terms to obtain certification in Arizona.

Pay Level Breakdown:

  • Level 21 – Master’s Degree
  • Level 22 – Master’s + 15 graduate credits
  • Level 23 – Master’s + 30 graduate credits
  • Level 24 – Doctorate Degree

Experience

Relevant counseling experience (paid or unpaid, including volunteer work) will be considered. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities through detailed application materials.
